The Kindergarten classroom encourages the development of self-directed behavior through a variety of classroom formats; including large and small group activities, projects and one-to-one learning opportunities. Monarch’s philosophy emphasizes the importance of social-emotional growth, a well-balanced academic curriculum, concept practice through play, hands-on activities, projects, and a supportive classroom community. In Kindergarten, your child will:
Contribute their ideas and preferences when participating in group activities.
Develop their language and listening skills and participate in group activities and discussions.
Participate in hands-on activities and projects, field trips and special events.
Social & Natural Sciences Curriculum
New social and natural science units are introduced every six weeks in the kindergarten classroom. Monarch’s unit structure integrates science and social studies into daily activity blocks; allowing for the expansion of concept practice in other academic areas.
Language Arts & Math Curriculum
Monarch Academy designs curriculum by selecting developmentally appropriate and research based programs that support the school philosophy. The kindergarten curriculum for language arts and math is taught using a workshop model which includes daily mini-lessons with individual, group and teacher-led activities. Monarch’s curriculum supports project-based, hands-on learning and meets the national academic standards.
Monarch students learn to apply basic math skills to real life applications when mathematical concepts are introduced in a conceptual way—first concrete, moving to pictorial and then to abstract. Developing a love and understanding for math concepts begins with a strong foundation in kindergarten. Monarch’s small class size ensures that group lessons will be followed by facilitated small group work focusing on individual need.
The workshop model for language arts builds choice and joy in literacy and ensures that, as children learn to read, they develop a love for reading and view themselves as readers and writers. Following each daily lesson, teachers work with small groups; working on literacy through phonics, penmanship, sight words, reading and writing practice.
